44MW Diaz Wind Farm Builds on Ombepo Success, Eyes 2025 Commissioning

The 44 megawatt (MW) Diaz wind farm near Lüderitz is scheduled for commissioning in July 2025.

Building on its successful experience with the Ombepo wind farm (3 turbines, 6MW, producing 22GWh per year), InnoVent acquired the Diaz wind project in 2022. Located near the Ombepo wind farm in Lüderitz, this site benefits from exceptional wind conditions with 5,000 hours of full production per year.

Construction work on the project by InnoVent, a company specialising in the installation and operation of wind and solar farms in France and Africa, started in 2023.

The company said in a media statement that the Diaz wind farm, with its eleven turbines, will boost Namibia’s renewable energy capacity.

“With an annual production of over 230 GWh of green electricity, the Diaz wind farm will represent 5 to 6% of Namibia’s electricity consumption (approximately 4,000 GWh per year), avoiding the emission of 200,000 tons of CO2 per year. This project will contribute to the country’s energy independence by reducing electricity imports and combating climate change,” said InnoVent founder Grégoire Verhaeghe.

InnoVent has been a key player in Namibia’s renewable energy landscape since 2011. The company developed Namibia’s first three solar power plants at Omburu, Osona, and Aussenkehr, as well as the first wind farm at Ombepo, just outside Lüderitz.

In 2019, InnoVent expanded its operations by constructing a fourth solar power plant in Omusati, increasing its capacity and availability.

Currently, InnoVent operates 26 MW in Namibia, producing approximately 76,500 MWh by 2023.

Currently, Namibia imports 60 to 70% of its electricity, mainly from South Africa, where it is generated from coal, leading to frequent power outages and a trade deficit.
